Video and Announcement: Record Jacket Machine

Not that we were keeping it a tight secret, but we are happy to announce that we have a new piece of machinery in the shop:  a Winkler and Dünnebier folder/gluer. What the heck is that you ask? It’s a machine specifically built for making record jackets. This expansion is part of a joint venture with our good friends over at Samo Media that we have named The Record Jacket Corporation.

The machine was made in Germany in 1977 and is allegedly the first one of its kind to make it across the pond, back in the days when Canada was at the top of the printing pyramid for the entertainment industry in North America. We bought it from a family-owned business just outside of Toronto. Bill, the father, had been making record jackets since the 50′s (great stories) and Scott, his son, remembers being a young pup running around the factory. The machine had been sitting unused in their factory for 5 years and for the decade prior to that it had only been used to make blank jackets. We are heavily indebted to the two of them and their former operator Jay for helping us getting it back up and running.

We have pricing listed for the standard jackets that we’ll be offering on our price list, but please bear with us as we crunch some more numbers and offer an expanded list of options. Definitely get in touch if there’s something you’re interested in that you don’t see listed.

To celebrate our launch of the new machine Caitlin Durlak came by late one night and shot some incredible footage of the machine running. We are slightly giddy about the results! Definitely check out her site and her upcoming interview series!
